Emergency Medical Services

Training

The Norwalk Fire Department provides emergency medical services at the first-responder level. Department staff members are trained in basic life support as either Emergency Medical Responder (EMRs) or Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).

The department provides initial and refresher training while firefighters are on duty. Each firefighter receives continuing education training annually.

Emergency Response

The closest engine company will respond to a location in less than four minutes after being notified of an emergency. Firefighters can provide CPR, supplemental oxygen, or simply a hand to hold before hospital paramedics arrive.

Important Equipment

One of the most important pieces of equipment used in emergency medical services is the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). This life-saving device can save a victim of cardiac arrest if firefighters are on scene in the first few minutes after a collapse.
