December 10, 2002

Call to order at 5:30 PM

Present: Mr. Lalime, Dr. McNamara and Dr. Tracey

A motion to approve the minutes of the October 8, 2002 meeting made by Dr. McNamara, seconded by Dr. Tracey passed unanimously

Smallpox Clinic Preparations

A PowerPoint slide presentation was reviewed. Per the orders of the Centers for Disease Control and the Connecticut Department of Health Services, in the event of a smallpox case local health departments will be responsible for vaccinating the town’s population within a 10 day period. An outline of the set up and operation of mass vaccination clinics was discussed. More details will be presented at the January 2003 meeting.

Influenza Vaccine Clinics

Eleven community clinics were held and 7 businesses are scheduled. The turnout is less than in 2001. A final report will be presented at the January 2003 meeting.

Environmental Conditions in Schools

The State of Connecticut was awarded a grant that will enable the Department of Health to assist school districts to implement the Tools for Schools program. The goal of this project is to identify problem areas and to develop plans to improve indoor air quality. Mr. Callahan has spoken with the Public Schools Facility Director about this project. The project is being considered by the school system.

Other Business

Ordinances

The Ordinance Committee considered and voted to conduct public hearings on the Salon and Public Pool ordinances. The Hearing is scheduled for December 19, 2002 at 7:30 PM in City Hall.

State Budget

The Governor’s proposal to balance the state budget includes the defunding of Tobacco education programs, the defunding of the Connecticut Immunization Registry and a $2.6 million reduction in funding to community health centers.
