Present: Board of Health – Ken Lalime, RPH, John McNamara, MD, Edward Tracey,
MD and Theresa Quell, PhD, RN,
Staff – Tim Callahan, Director of Health, Rhonda Collins, Health Educator and
William Mooney, Emergency Response Coordinator
Minutes of June 12, 2007 meeting – A motion to approve was made by Mr. Lalime, seconded by Dr. Tracey, and approved unanimously.
Introduction of New Board Member Theresa Quell
Mr. Callahan introduced new board member Theresa Quell. Ms Quell is the Assistant
Dean and Undergraduate Program Director at the Fairfield University School of
Nursing. Ms Quell is a former president of the Norwalk Board of Education and
has been active for years in the Norwalk community. The Board members welcomed
Ms. Quell
Employee Wellness project
Mr. Callahan and Rhonda Collins, Health Educator spoke about an employee wellness
initiative for City and Norwalk Public School employees. A steering committee
is actively planning to launch a physical activity program by January 2008.
In order to engage employees in the design of the program a survey to identify
their interest will be administered during the last two weeks of September.
On September 12, 2007 representatives from CIGNA and Anthem, the managed care companies engaged by the City and Public Schools, will present their programs to the Steering Committee.
Mr. Lalime spoke about his experience in the design and implementation of a wellness initiative with Electric Boat and Health Net. Mr. Lalime offered to meet with the Steering Committee to talk about this project.
Pandemic Influenza Clinic Drill
On Saturday October 13, 2007, a large-scale seasonal flu clinic will be held
at Norwalk High School. The goal is to immunize 2,000 people during the 6-hour
clinic. William Mooney, Emergency Planning Coordinator, provided details about
this project. The Incident Command Structure will be employed with full time
Health Department personnel assigned to various supervisory roles. Volunteers
are being sought from local organizations such as the Rotary, Kiwanis and Exchange
Clubs. Mr. Mooney asked the Board members to serve as observers at the clinic.
This clinic is an opportunity to exercise the Health Department Pandemic Influenza
Response.
Other Business
Recognizing the growing incidence of this disease and the devastating effect
advanced stages of the disease have on people, Dr McNamara asked about the Health
Department’s role in addressing Lyme disease. Mr. Callahan will prepare a presentation
for the October meeting.
