The meeting began at 3:00 PM.
BOE Presentation of Data on 95 Computer Kit Purchases :
Initially there were 95 PCs needed, Briggs school is out, so 70 PCs are needed.
The kit allows you to build a PC from the ground up at the same configuration
(buy, build, deploy). The kits are provided by Corporate Computer, maintained
by warranty and BOE staff.
Gerald Foley asked what other companies sell the kits, what are the other options. Craig said it is easier to support if you use the same vendor, and need a 4 week window to build kits. Training is done by certified CSCO teachers.
BOE has agreed to review competitive bids from other vendors including, Dell and Gateway.
Authorization for BOE to Purchase HP 2300DN Printers:
27 High capacity remote printers at schools (report cards, transcripts, office printing). The centralized printing will minimize the use of the inkjets. The color cartridges are becoming a large expense.
Review & Discuss BOE proposed NCR File Server Specifications:
12 servers need upgrades to rack mounted versions, 1 per school, (all NCR and Novell OS), price is 11,222 per server. The hardware problem replacement time is 4 hours. This can be bundled into 20 for discount on service contracts. The GSA proposal goes to the council on the 9th for approval. Alternative specs for BOE servers was discussed. Option for TCO for PCs in schools was also discussed. The notion that the leasing model can keep you more current and stabilize expenses was discussed. The curriculum drives your hardware requirements, but we don't want personal needs or desires to dictate the standard. John L. passed out a spreadsheet for a TCO calculation for review by the committee. BOE wants to have at least every school to have one PC with the latest configuration. The possibility of using Rowayton schools with a small form factor as a TCO trial was discussed.
A formal motion was made by Sue Wallerstein and seconded by
David Wren to that the Norwalk ITT Committee recommends that the Norwalk Board
of Education evaluate the benefits of small form factor equipment and consider
a pilot with the Rowayton school project currently in the prepurchase stage.
The economics and space advantages as well as the total cost of ownership
over the next years might outweigh the initial incremental cost.
