| Who
We Are
The Norwalk AfterSchool Alliance is a city-wide,
volunteer collaborative of more then forty organizations that are
working together to expand and improve out-of school time offerings
for K-8 grade students in Norwalk.
Why We Need
The AfterSchool Alliance
While
many after school programs and other out-of school time activities
are offered in Norwalk, the demand for those services is much higher
than what is available.
The AfterSchool Alliance recently surveyed elementary school families.
Of the 958 respondents (representing about 20% of all elementary
students), 47% of them indicated they would like childcare, but
only 25% of them currently used before and/or after school care.
This suggests that a quarter of the families of elementary children
or 1,375 children in Norwalk have not found appropriate childcare
services. In addition, 65% of families would like homework
help for their children, 79% sports or physical activities, and
88% enrichment activities.
The
Alliance is still in the process of collecting data about the current
situation and the needs of middle school students. The small sampling
complied to data reflects the results of the elementary surveys.
