"Devon's Place" is to be a 20,000 square foot playground, designed as a model for safety and accessibility. Typically-able children, as well as children with physical, mental and sensory challenges, will be able to use and enjoy "Devon's Place". There is currently no facility in Fairfield County where children of all abilities can play together and learn from each other in a social situation.
Located in Lockwood-Mathews Park, "Devon's Place" is easily reached and ideally situated, adjacent to the Stepping Stones Childrens Museum. It will look like an ordinary playground, but will include wheelchair-height sandboxes, swings with high backs for support, braille signs and musical stimulation for the visually impaired, and a variety of equipment on which both typically-able and disabled children can play together.
"Devon's Place" will be designed with input from all interested members of the Greater Norwalk community, following guidelines provided by Boundless Playgrounds, a non-profit CT organization which has supported similar facilities in New Haven, West Hartford and Los Angles, among many others.
"Devon's Place" will meet or exceed all safety standards for
public playgrounds, and be open without charge to all children.
