Events from the Heritage Park Opening Weekend
June 2001

"Classical Music for Kids" -- trio from the American Classical Orchestra, one of the nation's premiere historical ensembles, performs works by Vivaldi, Handel and Mozart. ACO Music Director Thomas Crawford joined by Nina Stern and Andrew Schwartz for a performance that introduced children to classical music in an interactive, age-appropriate, entertaining format. The musicians performed on original instruments known to the composers, and audiences heard the differences in sound between the original and new instruments.

Heritage Park Official Opening Ceremonies in Mathews Park. Participants included Connecticut State Treasurer Denise Napier; Norwalk Mayor Frank Esposito; State Senator Robert Genuario; Edward Bowers, chairman of the Norwalk Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Committee; Peter Nolin, president, Norwalk Common Council; and Pamela Stark, cochairperson, Norwalk State Heritage Park Opening Weekend. James Banks, director, Norwalk Marketing and Business Development, served as emcee.

Unveiling of Art Under the Bridge (beneath I-95). Sponsor participants included Joe Lauria, Malcolm Pirnie; Fred Treffeissen, Operations Management International; Marilyn Chickey, Central Parking Inc.; and John Block, Allan Davis Company.

Inaugural Bike Ride along new 1/2-mile multipurpose trail from Mathews Park to Maritime Aquarium. Participants included members of Sound Cyclists Bicycle Club.

American Festival Concert Band -- popular Big Band arrangements of patriotic and classical music.

 

"Opera on Broadway" -- The Norwalk Opera
performed a selection of popular arias and show tunes.

 

"Florissa the Fish" -- preview of new musical comedy with imaginative staging, movement and humor performed by a 12-member ensemble from Voicepoint.

The Greater Norwalk Community theatre -- scenes & monologues from well-known plays, plus improvisation with audience participation.

 

Crystal Theatre -- excerpts from Broadway Babies and Ellis Island plus songs by KRYSTAL from their "Coming of Age" CD.

 

Chamber music was performed by the string quartet from Norwalk Youth Symphony.

 

Norwalk Youth Symphony's Principal Orchestra -- concert of musical selections by Bernstein, Lebhaft, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Schumann and Williams performed by 82 talented young musicians from 30 area communities.

 

Musical & Dramatic Extravaganza -- features the Norwalk Symphony, Shakespeare on the Sound and Chris Coogan & The Good News Gospel Choir in a program celebrating America's heritage and cultural diversity. Music from Bernstein's West Side Story juxtaposed with scenes from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet -- additional selections by Berlin, Gershwin, Grainger and Rossini.
