Tax Collector - Tax Bills

Notice is hereby given that the first installment of TAXES on the grand list of October 1, 2008, and sewer use charges, are DUE AND PAYABLE on July 1, 2009. The last day on which to pay without penalty will be Monday. August 3, 2009. Rates for these taxes are as follows: Districts 1,2,3,8 & 9 with garbage pick-up: 19.779; without garbage pick-up: 19.304. District 4 with garbage pick-up: 19.840; without garbage pick-up: 19.365. District 5: 19.365. Districts 6 & 7: 18.226. All motor vehicles are taxes at the rate of 24.355 mills (District 10).

Late payments are subject to interest penalty at the rate of one and one half percent per month or fraction thereof, 18 percent per annum, from the due date of the tax, as required by Conn. Gen. Stat. 12-130, 145 and 146. Taxpayers have two extra days (until August 3, 2009) because August 1, 2009 falls on a Saturday.

Payments received August 4, 2009 and later, including payments postmarked August 4, 2009 and later, are considered past due. Payments postmarked on or before August 3, 2009 are timely regardless of when they reach the Tax Collector's office. The minimum interest charge is $2 on each tax bill. The returned check fee is $25.

The first installment of dual installment real estate, sewer use, and personal property tax bills in excess of $100 are due. The second installment of dual installment bills will come due January 1, 2010, payable by February 1, 2010. Supplemental Motor Vehicle taxes for vehicles newly registered (first time registration) between Oct. 2, 2008 - July 31, 2009 will be due in a single installment, payable by February 1, 2010.

As owners of property, taxpayers are responsible to see that taxes are paid when due. Failure to have received a bill does not exempt the taxpayer from payment of all taxes and all interest charges and collection costs, as per Conn. Gen. Stat. 12-130 and 12-146. Interest is charged on all late payments. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Tax bills will be mailed to taxpayers June 19. You do not have to wait to receive your bill - you may pay anytime. You may also click here to access your e-tax bill lookup.

Tax bills may not reflect recent changes of ownership. Owners of real estate purchased within 2 months of a tax billing cycle who do not receive a tax bill should contact the Tax Collector's Office at (203)-854-7731 for a copy of their bill, and when possible, should verify with the Assessor's Office that the transfer has gone through.
