TAX COLLECTOR

FAQ - Question 11

Q: I recently replaced a vehicle, and still got a tax bill on the old vehicle. Do I have to pay it?
A: Yes. If you replaced one vehicle with another, and used the same license plates, in June 2007, you should have received a bill for the original (replaced) vehicle, which you should have paid by August 1.

In December 2007, you should receive a pro-rated Supplemental motor vehicle tax bill for the new vehicle. That bill gives you credit for the amount you paid (in July 2007) on the old vehicle. You receive this credit without having to apply for it. Your supplemental bill is also pro-rated, to reflect only the months the vehicle was registered.

Please note that you must have paid the entire amount due on the original (replaced) vehicle.

If you obtained new license plates for the new vehicle, you must apply for a credit. Contact the Assessors Office at (203) 854-7887 or by fax at (203) 854-7986. You must make application within a limited time, so do not delay!

See FAQ # 14 for additional information on "supplemental" vehicle taxes.
