Sewers:
What do I do if I get a sewer backup in my house?
Norwalk sanitary sewers are privately maintained by OMI, Inc.. First, call OMI at (203) 854-3217 and provide your name, address, phone number and nature of the back-up. OMI will dispatch a crew to check the main sewer line in the City’s right of way. If the sewer main is flowing freely without any obstructions, OMI, Inc. or the City will notify the resident that the problem must be within their own private line (somewhere between the sewer main, where the lateral connects, and the plumbing within the resident’s home). Homeowners are responsible for any work needed on the sewer, from the sewer main, up to and including their house.
Also call OMI to investigate
any sanitary sewer odors that may exist in your area. Any inquiries on issues
related to sanitary sewers can be made
at (203) 854-3217

How is the list of roads to be paved each year determined?
The Public Works Department
investigates the condition of roads independantly and through contracted paving
consultants (currently Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc - VHB). Paving consultants
conduct a complete inventory of every street in Norwalk every 4 years (25%
of the City's streets each year). DPW conducts a Budget Analysis utilizing
Pavement Management software provided by VHB. DPW then conducts visual inspections
and directs their consultant to perform Project Level Surveys on select streets.
The Department recommends specific repairs on select streets and prioritizes
them in the most economically efficient order. These lists are also often
influenced by recently completed work or plans for future improvements (municipal,
utility or otherwise). Each year's list is finalized, pending budget approvals
and Council authorization.
