Mentoring Program
Building Futures Through Mentoring (BFTM)
Building Futures through Mentoring is a partnership between the City of Norwalk, Serving All Vessels Equally (SAVE), the Human Services Council, Family and Children’s Agency, and the YMCA. This new mentoring initiative coordinates a one-on-one relationship for young people, between the ages of 10 and 18 years old, facing challenges and needing support to succeed. It also includes a free membership to the YMCA for all youth and mentors who participate.

Program Specifics
Building Futures through Mentoring provides youth with an adult mentor who can meet with them at least one hour a week at a supervised location, such as the YMCA, a local church, or school. The mentor’s job is to help the young person define individual goals and find ways to achieve these goals.

Since the expectations of each child will vary, the job of the mentor is to encourage the positive development of the young person. By sharing fun activities and conversation, a mentor encourages positive choices and promotes high self-esteem.

Mentor Qualifications / Placement Process

All mentors complete a formal training and undergo a criminal background check before they are allowed to work with youth.

In addition, there will also be an assessment of hobbies, strengths, and interests to develop a profile that will be helpful in matching the potential mentee with a mentor.
