The Detective Division is under the command of a lieutenant. The organizational structure of the division includes three squads of detectives, each supervised by a sergeant. This structure assures coverage from 8:00 am until midnight, seven days a week.

To attain the rank of detective, a Norwalk police officer must have a minimum of three years on the job, and pass a competitive written and oral examination.

Responsibilities
The division is required to assume responsibility for the following incidents:
  • All felonies where a follow-up investigation is required and necessary
  • Any misdemeanors where a follow-up investigation is deemed necessary by the detective supervisor
  • Any other matter determined by the Chief of Police to be appropriate

Most Part I crimes are also investigated by the detectives in this unit. Those crimes include:
  • Arson
  • Burglary and larceny
  • Murder
  • Robbery
  • Sexual assault
  • Stolen motor vehicles

The Detective Bureau realizes cooperation and coordination among various law enforcement agencies is essential to reducing the level of crime and solving crimes where they do occur. The Detective Bureau cooperates with other city, state, and federal agencies in investigating incidents, utilizing task forces, or other cooperative means.
