Eat Well Restaurant Spotlight

Spic & Span Market

The Healthy for Life Project's Eat Well Healthy Restaurant Initiative is delighted to shine a spotlight on Spic & Span Market in Southport. Our team asked Lori, who owns the market with her husband Greg, to tell us a little more about their business.

Q: What year did your market open and what type of food does your establishment provide?

A: Spic and Span Market was established in 1928--yes, this is our 90th year! Greg and I purchased the market in 1983, 35 years ago. Now I can proudly say that my son, after serving in Afghanistan, has decided he wants to go into the family business.

We are a full-service market featuring a meat department. (We don't pre-grind beef. We grind it fresh to order.) We have three full-time butchers on staff, so everything is cut fresh. We have fresh fish from a local fishmonger in Norwalk. We have a deli department, and we roast our own turkey, roast beef, and ham in-house daily. We have a produce department (sourced from local farms in season), a salad bar, grocery, and prepared food department (hot and cold).

Q: What is your favorite ingredient to work with?

A: That's difficult, but if I have to choose it would probably be chicken. It's the most versatile and definitely a hands-down favorite with our customers. The recipes are endless.

Q: What do you look forward to the most when you come to work at your market?

A: That's easy: our customers! Our community has a real village feel, we are family, we know everyone by name, and it only takes two or three visits for our new customers to feel at home. We pride ourselves on knowing how they like their food prepared. Our core staff have been with us for an average of 15 to 20 years. Greg and I have watched our customers' children grow up, and now they are having babies and are coming back to shop at our store. It's amazing.

Q: What is your favorite way to keep yourself healthy?

A: Eating clean, fresh food, nothing processed, cooking for ourselves, and knowing where our food comes from. It isn't difficult: simple is best, and of course, never stop moving.

Q: Tell us something unique or special about your market that not many people know.

A: We deliver twice a day. We also believe in the importance of community service. We head up the Southport Merchants Association which provides Santa arriving via fire truck every 2nd Thursday in December and helps with the blessing of the fleet and parade every June. We try to donate to local schools and charities as much as possible.

Over the years, we have worked with the local high schools to hire and train hundreds of young adults as cashiers and dishwashers, it really keeps us young and laughing while we prepare these kids for entrance into the work force.

Q: What is your favorite way to keep yourself healthy?

A: Along with clean eating of course, exercise and proper sleep are key. A lot of our customers fuel up at b.Good before or after the gym, it is nice to be a consistent part of their healthy lifestyle.

Q: Tell us something unique or special about your restaurant that not many people know.

A: Since we opened we have donated almost $2,000 to our Community Partner, Food Rescue US, and funded the rescue over 30,000 meals for those in need.  To raise awareness and support for childhood summer hunger, we are offering free kids meals (one with purchase of adult entrée) this month until Labor Day. When school is out, many families are burdened to provide 2 additional meals per day that their children receive for free in school during the year. Food Rescue US is dedicated to rescuing reusable, healthy grocery and restaurant waste to feed the hungry. We give our customers a chance to participate in all our donations, either through a unique “donate" option on rewards gifts we send out on our mobile app, or through give-back days where we donate a percentage of purchase to the non-profit.
