[ARCHIVED] MELISSA SLATTERY SELECTED AS CURATOR FOR THE MAYOR’S GALLERY

The Norwalk Arts Commission has selected Melissa Slattery as the Curator for the Mayor’s Gallery. The Mayor’s Gallery is one of the many public art programs that the Norwalk Arts Commission has initiated and oversees. Four shows planned for the Mayor’s Gallery in 2015-16 will focus on award-winning student artists; recognize Norwalk’s creative economy; celebrate the community’s diversity; and introduce some of Norwalk’s many cultural organizations.

Ms. Slattery brings a wealth of experience to this new position, that includes curating exhibitions nationwide for various municipalities and private interests. Ms. Slattery is a Norwalk resident and attended Norwalk Public Schools. She is an artist, teacher and graphic designer and has extensive experience in marketing and advertising. She is currently a lecturer in interdisciplinary studies at Norwalk Community College, where she has served on various committees, including the Committee for Diversity and Inclusion.
The Norwalk Arts Commission is continuing its efforts, through its tours and programs, to increase awareness and pride in Norwalk’s historic WPA mural collection, as well as the inventory of more than 100 works of public art. “The Mayor’s Gallery is the gateway to the Mayor’s Office and represents Norwalk’s diversity in every sense. We decided it was time to hire a curator to dedicate and manage this very important public space,” said Susan Wallerstein, Chairwoman of the Norwalk Arts Commission.

Mayor Harry Rilling said, “I want to thank the Norwalk Arts Commission and particularly members Tony Velez and Jeffery Price for taking the time review and select the best person for such a visible public space.”
